Toothache has a way of starting at the worst time: late at night, on a weekend, or just before a busy week. Home care can ease the pain for a short while, but it does not fix the cause. This guide explains what you can safely do now, what might be causing the pain, and when you need to see a dentist urgently.
Simple steps to ease toothache at home
- Rinse with warm salt water. Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and swish gently.
- Floss gently around the tooth. Food stuck between teeth can cause pressure and pain.
- Use a cold compress. Hold an ice pack wrapped in a cloth against your cheek for 15 minutes at a time.
- Take over-the-counter pain relief, such as paracetamol, following the dose on the label. Ask a pharmacist if you are unsure which is right for you.
- Avoid very hot, cold or sweet food and drinks, and chew on the other side.
- Keep your head raised when lying down, which can ease throbbing at night.
Do not put aspirin or other tablets directly on the gum, as they can burn it. Do not take leftover antibiotics: they will not fix the cause, and the wrong antibiotic can do more harm than good.
Common causes of toothache
| What you notice | Possible cause |
|---|---|
| Short, sharp pain with cold or sweet food | Sensitive teeth, early decay or a worn filling |
| Pain that lingers after hot or cold | Deeper decay reaching the nerve |
| Throbbing pain, worse at night | Inflamed or infected nerve (pulp) |
| Pain when biting | Cracked tooth, loose filling or infection at the root |
| Swelling, a pimple on the gum or a bad taste | Dental abscess |
| Pain at the back of the jaw with swollen gum | Wisdom tooth problems |
| Ache in several upper back teeth with a blocked nose | Sinus problems |
Only an examination, often with an X-ray, can tell the real cause. Many toothaches can be fixed with a filling. When the nerve is infected, root canal treatment can usually save the tooth. If a tooth cannot be saved, it may need an extraction.
When toothache is urgent
See a dentist as soon as possible, ideally the same day, if:
- The pain is severe or keeps you awake
- Pain lasts more than a day or two
- You have swelling in your gum or face
- You have a fever with the toothache
- A tooth has been knocked out or badly broken
Go to a hospital emergency department straight away if swelling spreads to your eye or neck, or you have difficulty breathing, swallowing or opening your mouth. These can be signs of a serious spreading infection.
How to prevent toothache
- Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
- Clean between your teeth daily
- Cut down on sugary snacks and drinks
- See your dentist for a check-up and scaling about every 6 months, so small problems are found before they hurt
Frequently asked questions
How can I stop toothache fast at home?
Rinse with warm salt water, floss gently, hold a cold compress on your cheek and take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the label. These ease the pain for a while, but you still need to see a dentist to fix the cause.
Can toothache go away on its own?
The pain may come and go, but the cause, such as decay or infection, usually gets worse without treatment.
Should I go to the dentist or the hospital?
For most toothaches, see a dentist. Go to a hospital emergency department if swelling spreads to your eye or neck, or you have difficulty breathing or swallowing.
