About dental bridges
A bridge is made of a false tooth (called a pontic) joined to crowns on the teeth either side of the gap. These supporting teeth are shaped so the crowns can fit over them, and the whole bridge is cemented in place, so it cannot be taken out like a denture.
A bridge can restore your smile and bite and stop the neighbouring teeth from drifting into the gap. Your dentist can also explain other options, such as a dental implant or a denture.
Who it can help
- People missing one or a few teeth in a row
- Teeth either side of the gap that are strong enough to support a bridge
- People who prefer a fixed option to a removable denture
What to expect
Examination and X-ray
Your dentist checks the gap and the supporting teeth.
Preparing the teeth
Under local anaesthetic, the teeth either side of the gap are shaped to hold the crowns.
Impression
An impression or scan is taken so the bridge can be made to fit.
Temporary bridge
A temporary bridge protects the teeth while the permanent one is made.
Fitting
The permanent bridge is checked for fit, colour and bite, then cemented in place.
