About Digital Smile Design

Digital Smile Design (DSD) is a planning method for cosmetic dentistry. Instead of guessing how new teeth will look, your dentist designs your smile on a computer using photos, video and a 3D scan of your teeth. The design takes into account your face shape, lip line, gum line and how much tooth shows when you talk and smile.

For veneers, this means the shape, length and shade of each tooth are agreed before any tooth is prepared. It helps you communicate what you want, and helps your dentist and dental lab deliver a result that looks natural on you.

Who it can help

  • Chipped, worn or uneven front teeth
  • Teeth that stay discoloured after whitening
  • Small gaps between front teeth
  • Teeth of different sizes or shapes
  • Anyone planning a smile makeover who wants to see the result first

If your teeth are very crooked, braces or clear aligners may be a better first step. Your dentist will explain all your options.

How Digital Smile Design works

  1. Consultation and smile goals

Tell us what you would like to change. Your dentist checks your teeth, gums and bite to make sure they are healthy enough for cosmetic treatment.

  2. Photos, video and 3D scan

We take smile photos, a short video and a digital scan of your teeth. These record how your teeth, lips and face move when you talk and smile.

  3. Your digital smile design

Your new smile is designed in 3D, with the shape, length and shade of each tooth planned to suit your face.

  4. Preview and decide

You review the design with your dentist. In many cases a temporary mock-up lets you try the new shape on your own teeth before you decide.

  5. Veneer preparation and fitting

Once you are happy, your teeth are prepared and your veneers are made to the approved design, then bonded in place.

  6. Review

We check your bite, comfort and gums, and give you tips to look after your new smile.

Porcelain or composite veneers?

Porcelain (ceramic) veneers are made in a dental lab. They resist staining and usually last longer. Composite veneers are built up directly on your teeth in the clinic. They cost less and can be repaired more easily, but may stain or chip sooner. Your smile design helps decide which is right for you.

Frequently asked questions

What is Digital Smile Design (DSD)?

Digital Smile Design is a way of planning a new smile on a computer before any treatment starts. Your dentist uses photos, a short video and a 3D scan of your teeth to design the shape, length and shade of each tooth, so you can see and discuss the planned result first.

How much do veneers cost at Qualiteeth?

Veneers at Qualiteeth start from RM1,600. The total depends on how many teeth are treated, the material, and whether you need other treatment first, such as gum care or fillings. Your dentist explains the full cost in writing before treatment begins.

Can I see my new smile before the veneers are made?

Yes, that is the main purpose of Digital Smile Design. You see the planned design on screen, and in many cases your dentist can place a temporary mock-up on your teeth so you can preview the new shape in your own mouth before deciding.

How many veneers do I need?

It depends on how wide your smile is and what you want to change. Some people need only one or two veneers to fix a chipped or discoloured tooth, while others choose six to ten for a full smile makeover. Your smile design shows which teeth are involved.

Porcelain or composite veneers: which is better for me?

Porcelain veneers are made in a lab, resist staining and usually last longer. Composite veneers are built up directly on the tooth, cost less and can be repaired more easily, but may stain or chip sooner. Your dentist will explain which suits your teeth, bite and budget.

Do veneers damage my natural teeth?

Porcelain veneers usually need a thin layer of enamel to be reshaped so they sit naturally. Planning the design digitally first helps your dentist keep this preparation as small as possible. Composite veneers often need little or no reshaping.

How long do veneers last?

With good brushing, regular check-ups and avoiding habits such as biting hard objects, porcelain veneers can last many years. Composite veneers usually need polishing or repair sooner. Your dentist will advise you on care.

Is the treatment painful?

Tooth preparation is done under local anaesthetic when needed, so the area is numb. Most people feel some sensitivity for a few days afterwards. Your dentist aims to keep discomfort to a minimum and will advise you on aftercare.

Should I whiten my teeth before getting veneers?

Often yes. Veneers are made to match the shade of your other teeth, and their colour cannot be changed later, so many patients whiten first. Your dentist will plan the right order during your smile design consultation.
