About scaling and polishing

Plaque that is not removed hardens into tartar (calculus), which sticks firmly to your teeth and can cause gum disease and bad breath. During scaling, your dentist removes the tartar from above and just below the gumline. Polishing then removes surface stains and smooths the teeth so plaque builds up more slowly.

Most people should have scaling and polishing about every 6 months, together with a check-up.

Who it can help

  • Everyone, as part of a regular 6-monthly check-up
  • Bleeding gums when brushing
  • Bad breath that does not go away
  • Stains from coffee, tea or smoking
  • Before braces, whitening or other treatment
